How to Set Up My Fitness Pal to Count Macros

  If you are following a flexible diet or IIFYM/If it fits your macros, you have to tediously count and keep track of your macronutrients.  This process isn’t as time consuming as you may think with the help of My Fitness Pal.  My Fitness Pal is an application you can get on your smart phone or tablet that acts as a food journal.  You can also input your exercise and water input.  This application takes all the guessing out of it!  When you first log into MFP its settings will be pre-set.  Like I’ve said in my post What is IIFYM? everyones macronutrients are going to be different.  It is variable on your weight, your goal weight, and your activity level.   This means in order to properly use the app to calculate your macros you have to tailor it to your specifics.

Paleo diet vs IIFYM/clean eating

The Paleo Diet is all the rage currently, especially in the crossfit community. The premise of the paleo diet  is that our prehistoric ancestors never had an obesity problem–  They survived off the land and fueled their bodies appropriately enough to be strong enough to hunt dinosaurs, build rock caves, yada yada.  Theoretically this sounds great, high protein, lots of veggies, doing as the Neanderthals did, but I believe it has its flaws.  First, you’re telling me that a caveman would have had cows for beef–but would not have drank their milk??  That caveman would have found a peanut plant and shoved their noses to it because its a LEGUME?   Continue reading

Example Day of IIFYM

What does a day following the If It Fits Your Macro approach look like?? Well the best part about it is that there is no right answer! This approach is very flexible everyone’s days should be very different!  I wanted to just share one day of food with you. As you can see it’s a lot of food!! You shouldn’t have to starve while trying to reach your ideal weight! 

Here is everything I ate today– I usually avoid carbs later in the evening because I work out in the AM, but I had a lot of carbs (and no fats) to make up at the end of the night == oatmeal and fruit. This is the downfall of not planning out your day, but I love the freedom of eating what I feel like without being trapped into a contract, so to speak.  

Meal One:

1/2 c. Oatmeal, 1/4 c blueberries, 1 scoop Cinnamon Swirl Protein Powder, 1 tbs maple almond butter, dash cinnamon

What is IIFYM?


IIFYM, or “If It Fits Your Macros” is a diet that takes macronutrients into consideration for your weight goal. There are three major macronutrients that the human body needs in order to function properly: carbohydrates, protein, and fats. Essentially, this diet is providing the body with exactly the macronutrients it needs for your goals–whether that be weight loss, maintaining current weight, or bulking/weight gain.  IIFYM is sought after for its ability to be flexible and nonrestrictive when it comes to the foods you can consume.  Nothing is off limits if it fits into your macros.   Continue reading
